Have you heard about the Community Cat Program in Pocatello, Idaho? Read more to learn more about the program that is working to save lives and help improve the community by supporting our feline friends.

What is it?

The Community Cat Program is run by the Pocatello Animal Services and their partner Best Friends Animal Society. Stray cats that are brought in are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and ear-tipped. The ear tip is a sign that a stray cat has been properly neutered or spayed. After the cats are recovered, they are returned to their community.

How does this help?

Spaying and neutering outdoor cats helps to reduce the overall cat population over time by preventing unwanted litters of kittens. The vaccination treatment also helps to raise the health of outdoor cats. By being able to return to the cats to their neighborhoods, it also leaves more room for other animals to be taken into the shelter. This helps to reduce the amount of cats who die in shelters.

Why doesn’t the shelter keep the cats?

Unfortunately, animal shelters are always packed with lost and/or stray dogs and cat. The resources are simply not available to care for every single stray animal in Pocatello. By spaying/neutering strays and releasing them, the shelter is able to help keep the overall population down and prevent more stray animals from being born.

Does this cost money?

The Community Cat Program actually helps to save taxpayers’ money! By returning the cats outside, Pocatello Animal Services does not have to continuously pay for cats’ food and medical while waiting for adoption.
