check engine light on

There are many reasons why a check engine light can be on. Read more to find out what it means and how to diagnose your vehicle.

The Basics

When you start your vehicle, the engine light should illuminate with the rest of your dashboard for a few seconds. If it remains on, this means it is giving you a warning. The engine light comes on to warn you there is a malfunction in your vehicle’s emissions, ignition, fuel or exhaust system.

What is the issue?

This is hard to diagnose by yourself, as it can be a wide range of problems. It can be something as small as the gas cap being loose or a faulty spark plug, or something more serious like a major engine problem.

How do I get it diagnosed?

An auto technician will be able to electronically hook up to your vehicle’s diagnostic system and isolate what is causing the check engine warning. This can be done at your local mechanic in Blackfoot, Idaho at Tadd Jenkins CDJR!

Blinking Check Engine Light

If your check engine light is blinking and not solid, this indicates a very serious issue. If this happens, take your vehicle to a mechanic right away and do not continue to drive it.
