There have been several reports of a mountain lion in Hailey, Idaho over the past several weeks. Read more to find out more about what officials are saying you can do to keep you and your pets safe.

With the recent sightings of the mountain lion in Hailey, Idaho, reports of missing cats have also increased. Officials are hoping to trap the mountain lion and remove it from the city. At this time, the cause of the mountain lion coming into neighborhoods is unknown. In the meantime, here it was you can do to keep you and your pets safe.

  1. Make sure your garbage is inaccessible to any wildlife to prevent any scrounging for food. While the mountain lion may not necessarily be the one foraging through your trash, its prey will be.
  2. Check your property for anywhere a mountain lion could hide. Make sure any sheds are secured and locked and block off areas underneath any decks.
  3.  Keep pets inside at all times. When taking them outside, have them on a leash at all times.
  4. Carry bear spray, something to make loud noise like an air-horn, and a flashlight if it’s dark.

The Idaho State Journal reported that wildlife managers say to take these precautions if you run into a mountain lion:

  • NEVER run away from a mountain lion as their instinct is to chase and catch.
  • NEVER turn your back. Face the mountain lion and make yourself look as big as possible.
  • Slowly back away while maintaining eye contact with the lion.
  • If you are attacked, fight back!
